Maintenance of tail piece

Such a tail piece from MerCruiser does need regular maintenance. It is best to check the tail oil annually. You do this by simply unscrewing the bottom screw before the winter and see what comes out. If water comes out or if the oil is white or creamy you need to replace the seals of the tail. Replace them all at once, not just one. If the oil is black, then you need to change the oil.

It is also good to check the magneto for iron filings. There will always be some wear, so a limited amount of iron grit may be on it, but not too much. If the color of the oil is green and there is little iron filings then you do not need to change the oil.

Impeller, rubbers and anodes maintenance

The MerCruiser Impeller should officially be replaced every 100 hours. The MerCruiser Alpha one generation 2 impeller can last longer. We recommend that you replace the impeller every year.

The tail rubbers should officially be replaced every 5 years including the bearing. The anodes should be inspected annually. For fresh water use magnesium anodes. For brackish water use aluminum anodes and for salt water zinc anodes are needed.

Of course we can supply all these MerCruiser tail parts, both original and good alternative.

Moment of maintenance

It is best to prepare the engine and tail for the winter before the motor is stored. Check the tail engine and the tail piece. Examine the tail oil, the tail rubbers, the anodes and the paint on the tail. Of course, this also applies to the engine.

In the spring, before the water sports season begins, it is best to run the engine, then oil it and change the filters.

For this, it is recommended to use the original MerCruiser oil filters and gasoline water separator filters. They are well affordable and meet factory specifications.

The same goes for the oil. The use of original MerCruiser oils extends the life of the engine and tailpiece.

In short, we can supply all MerCruiser tailpieces and parts.

Uper and Lower Unit explanation

The upper part of the tail is also called the Upper unit. It contains the gears that are adjusted to the ratio of the number of revolutions of the engine to the propeller as best as possible.

The lower unit contains the gears and the shift shaft for the forward, neutral and reverse.

General information MerCruiser tailpieces

The most common MerCruiser tail pieces are the Mercruiser Alpha one generation one, used from the 1970s through 1990.

From 1991 to the present you speak of the MerCruiser alpha one generation 2. For the heavier engines, V6, V8 and diesel engines, the MerCruiser Bravo tail pieces were designed. These came on the market in the late 80s and are still being produced. Of course, there are different versions. The most important are the MerCruiser Bravo 1, 2, and 3 with twin propellers. These have been improved in recent years and there are now X and race versions.

Of course we can also supply for these tailpieces all tailpiece parts such as transom service kit, tail oil, anodes, impeller, retaining ring sets, trim cylinders, gears, bearings, water pump sets and more.
