A MerCruiser that suddenly runs hotter than normal after maintenance, discharges cooling water irregularly, or even triggers a temperature alarm often doesn't have a major fault behind it, but simply air in the system. That's exactly why bleeding a MerCruiser cooling system is something many boat owners underestimate. Especially after replacing the impeller, thermostat housing, hoses, circulation pump, or closed cooling system components, an air pocket can be enough to disrupt the cooling.
On MerCruiser engines, you first need to know exactly which system you're working with. An open cooling system with raw water behaves differently than a half or fully closed cooling system with coolant and a heat exchanger. The approach looks similar, but the spots where air gets trapped aren't always the same. That usually involves less classic bleeding than with a car, since the system continuously flows during operation. Air problems here more often arise from intake issues, leakage on the suction side, or an impeller that doesn't properly pick up after installation.
With a closed cooling system, it's different. There, coolant circulates through the engine and heat exchanger, and it's precisely in that closed loop that air can get trapped. Especially around the thermostat housing, heat exchanger, high-lying hoses, and any branches to the power steering cooler or extra cooling components.
If you're not sure which system is on your engine, first look at the build-up. If you see an expansion tank or pressure cap with coolant, you at least have a closed section that needs to be correctly filled and bled. If you're unsure about the version, it's wise to first get the engine number before replacing parts or bleeding blindly.
How to approach bleeding safely and practically
Always work with a cold engine. Opening a warm MerCruiser under pressure is asking for trouble. First check that all hoses are properly secured, clamps are tight, and the correct parts are fitted. A small air leak or an incorrectly positioned thermostat later causes exactly the same complaints as air in the system.
Then calmly fill the closed section with the specified coolant or the correct mixture. Don't pour it in quickly all at once, but slowly, so air gets the chance to rise. Meanwhile, gently squeeze the higher coolant hoses a few times to move trapped air along. On some MerCruiser set-ups, it helps to position the front of the engine slightly more favourably, so air moves towards the highest point.

A second common mistake is testing at high rpm right away. First, at idle and light rpm, it needs to be clear that cooling stays stable. Only then does a test run make sense. If the temperature is already rising erratically on land, further testing has no added value.
