First check: battery voltage and voltage drop
A new battery doesn't rule out a power supply problem. We first measured battery voltage at rest and then during starting. In doing so, you don't just look at the number on the battery, but especially at voltage drop across positive cables, earth cables, and connection points. In the marine environment, cables, lugs, and clamps take a beating from moisture, oxidation, and inactivity.
Resting voltage was fine, but during starting we saw a larger voltage drop than desirable. Not extreme enough to immediately point to a faulty starter motor, but enough to search further in the wiring. The earth connection on the engine block in particular turned out to be contaminated and slightly corroded. That sometimes gives just enough contact for a start, but the system then sags under load.
After cleaning the earth and positive connections, the starter motor turned over noticeably better. Still, the complaint wasn't fully gone. The engine now started more powerfully, but warm starting remained occasionally difficult. That made it clear more was going on than just resistance in the starting system.
Where poor starting on a MerCruiser often comes from
On MerCruiser engines, we roughly see four main directions: electrical supply, ignition, fuel, and tuning. Sometimes it's one clear cause, but it's often a combination of two smaller deviations that together cause problems. That's exactly why working step by step matters more than quickly ordering parts.
In this case, after the power supply check, we moved on to ignition. Spark plugs, plug leads, distributor cap, and rotor can look usable on paper but react differently under heat and load. An engine that just about starts cold but becomes difficult warm regularly points to weakening ignition components or a coil starting to work outside specification.
Ignition checked, but not the main culprit
The spark plugs showed a slightly uneven picture, though not enough to explain the whole problem. The distributor cap and rotor showed signs of use but no direct damage. Spark was present, so the temptation is then strong to move on to fuel. Still, you need to be careful there. Spark being present isn't automatically a strong, stable spark at the right moment.
Because the engine ran fine once it did start, a fully failing ignition system was less likely. We did advise including the ignition wear parts in the maintenance plan, since questionable ignition parts can cause fresh complaints later. Not every finding has to be the main cause immediately, but you do want to prevent a second weak point from being left in place.
Fuel turned out to be the deciding factor
The real clue was in the behaviour after being switched off warm. After a few minutes of standing still, it took longer cranking before the engine caught. That drew attention to the fuel supply. On carburetted and some older injection systems, weak fuel delivery, dropping pressure, or contamination in filters and lines can produce exactly this picture.
In this case, the fuel filter/water separator turned out to be contaminated, and the lift pump was no longer working consistently at the right level. As a result, the engine didn't always get sufficient fuel delivery on the first start attempt. That was less noticeable cold, since the system reacted differently after a longer period of inactivity. Warm, with a more critical mixture and less reserve in the supply, the complaint showed up much more clearly.
After replacing the filter and checking the fuel pump, starting behaviour immediately improved. Still, we also checked the hoses and connections for tiny air intake and ageing. A half-solved starting problem often comes back if only the visible part is replaced.
Why replacing individual parts often ends up more expensive

How to logically approach a MerCruiser with starting problems
Anyone doing their own diagnosis benefits most from a fixed order. Start with the basics: battery condition, cable connections, earth points, and voltage during starting. Then check whether the engine cranks too slowly, or cranks well but doesn't catch. That distinction saves a lot of searching.
If it cranks slowly, you're more likely looking at the battery, wiring, starter relay, starter motor, or mechanical resistance. If it cranks well but doesn't fire, attention shifts to spark, fuel, or safety interlocks. With warm-starting problems, you need to be extra alert to fuel pressure, evaporation behaviour, weakening ignition parts, and connections that react differently under temperature loss or expansion.
Also always check the simple things that are often skipped. A contaminated fuel filter, old petrol, moisture in the distributor, or a poor engine earth connection are seen far more often in practice than a spectacular internal fault. Precisely because those causes sound less dramatic, they're sometimes checked last.
When replacing is immediately the right call
Sometimes measuring is enough to decide right away. A heavily corroded battery cable, a starter motor with clear signs of wear, or a fuel filter that's visibly contaminated don't need endless reassessment. In that case, replacing is logical. But even then, the question of why the part failed remains relevant. Otherwise you're fitting a new part into a system that already has the next fault lined up.
On boats that have been sitting idle for a long time, have been through winter storage, or run with irregular maintenance, it's wise to look at starting problems more broadly than just the acute complaint. Think of filters, ignition maintenance, charging voltage, fuel quality, and the condition of the wiring. That prevents a boat that starts fine at the dock from acting up again out on the water.
The outcome of this case
In this fault, the solution wasn't one spectacular failure, but a combination of two practical causes: a poor earth connection due to contaminated connections, and insufficient consistent fuel delivery due to a contaminated filter and weak supply. That exact combination made the complaint inconsistent and therefore hard to pin down without measurements.
After restoring the electrical connections, replacing the fuel filter, and checking the fuel pump, the engine started predictably again, both cold and warm. That's ultimately what it's about. Not just that the engine starts today, but that you can trust it to do the same next week.
For owners with a similar complaint, the main lesson is simple. Poor starting on a MerCruiser almost never benefits from guesswork. Work from power supply to ignition to fuel, check under load, and always look at the whole system. That way you don't just fix today's complaint, but also prevent unnecessary downtime during the boating season.
